I always interpreted the movie's message as to embrace your negatives to use them as a positive. Beast tries to reject his mutations due to self conciousness and ends up making things worse for himself, therefore proving that the more time you spend worrying about what you are, the more you degrade what you can be. Most other characters embrace what they at first see as deformities and use them to fight for good.
